What was that Justin Bieber album...that's right, "Never Say Never"!

Know who this is?

Don’t feel bad, until 10PM last night NOBODY outside the Jazz world knew who [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Esperanza Spalding[/lastfm] was. Didja know that if you’d have bet $100 on her in Vegas, you’d have won $1500!

Esperanza Spalding winning the Best New Artist GRAMMY may have been the biggest upset of the night…but it wasn’t the only one…

Who is Arcade Fire and why did they keep us from a 6-Grammy sweep?

Lady Antebellum almost ran the table, going five for six. Three more than I predicted…so while I fill up on more crow, here’s the breakdown:

Record of the Year. Song of the Year. Best Country Song. Best Country Album. Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group.

The only one of the six they didn’t grab last night was Album of the Year. That one went to the last act I’d thought would’ve won…

Don't go hatin' on us 'cuz we spoiled Lady A's GRAMMY sweep!

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Arcade Fire[/lastfm].

Who? I can’t find anyone anywhere who knows who they are. My 23-year-old rock musician son calls them artsy-fartsy and hopes they go away.

EVERY. OTHER. ONE. of the nominees in that category had a pedigree to back up their nomination.

Lady GaGa is so popular even 70-year-old Grandmas recognize the name. Katy Perry, like GaGa, is a pop phenomenon, and Eminem made his best album ever.

Then there’s Lady A. Who outsold all the above mentioned acts in 2010…although Eminem came awfully close. This Is Their Time.

Anyway, I thought Miranda Lambert would have had a better night…but she still gets to take one GRAMMY home…

So Blake, don't I look hot in GRAMMY gold?

Best Female Country Vocal, for “The House That Built Me”. She turned in a fine performance of same song as well…introduced by fiance [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Blake Shelton[/lastfm], gushing in front of America…”I LOVE this performer!”

Mom! Keith won a GRAMMY! No, they won't show it on TV, you'll have to take my word for it...

Meanwhile, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Keith Urban[/lastfm] won the GRAMMY for Best Country Male Vocal. And since they didn’t show it – or [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Zac Brown Band[/lastfm]/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Alan Jackson[/lastfm]’s GRAMMY for Best Country Collaboration…

Naah, we didn't get all dressed up, it's not like we're gonna be on TV!

…or two of Lady A’s awards – Best Country Duo/Group and Best Country Song…

…I began to wonder if there weren’t some snubbing going on.

So I went to the GRAMMY website and found a similar percentage of Rap, R&B, Pop, Jazz etc. awards were also handed out before the broadcast. Remember there are 109 categories and you can’t cut all the performances and just hand out awards…that would be about as interesting as watching flat beige latex paint dry.

Of course there are a few performances we could’ve done without:

cee lo green and gwyneth by kevin winter Charlies GRAMMY Wrap up...A Great Day For Lady A!

This is EXACTLY what Kelly Kanter would've done in Country Strong!

Yes, that IS [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Gwyneth Paltrow[/lastfm] lying on the piano. And while many men would love to come home to find Gwyneth on their piano, what we have instead is Gwyneth lying on a piano played by Big Bird…no wait a minute, it’s this guy!

The artist currently known as Cee-Lo Green

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Cee-Lo Green[/lastfm]. The “Forget You-but-that’s-not-what-it’s-really-called” guy. Or as the GRAMMY people called it… “(The Song Also Known As Forget You)”. Complete with parentheses.

Did we mention there were Muppets playing as part of this performance?!

Country Strong will be On Demand by Spring.

Then there was Stephanie Germanotta. You know her better as [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lady GaGa[/lastfm].

lady gaga grammy egg by larry busacca Charlies GRAMMY Wrap up...A Great Day For Lady A!

Who hatched THIS idea?!

The Lady made her red carpet entrance as you see above.

In an egg. Like a giant Leggs Panty Hose egg.

Then she performed her new song “Born This Way”…a self-important ‘statement’ song about being who you are and loving who you want…then when she accepted her award for Best Pop Vocal Album, she wore something resembling the rubber floormats in my ’95 Blazer 4×4:

At least she's not wearing meat!

The nice thing about Country Music is…well, it’s all about The Music, rather than creating media hype by dressing in rubber floormats…or meat, as GaGa did last year.

And speaking of the music…[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Martina McBride[/lastfm] was part of a classy ensemble of divas including [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Christina Aguilera[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jennifer Hudson[/lastfm] and others, saluting Lady Soul herself, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Aretha Franklin[/lastfm].

A great way to open the show.

Other observations…for better or worse:

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Mick Jagger[/lastfm] – at 67 – looked and sounded younger than I’d seen in years.

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Barbra Streisand[/lastfm], on the other hand, is showing her age.

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Muse[/lastfm]’s “Uprising” was the catchiest rock song of the night.

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Katy Perry[/lastfm] can sing better than that. If she can’t, maybe she shouldn’t go where she can’t take Auto-Tune.

George Beverly Shea is 102…and still alive!

“Jolene” is a pop music oldie in [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Keith Urban[/lastfm]’s native Australia. He was a good choice to join in that [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Dolly Parton[/lastfm] lifetime achievement tribute.

That [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Eminem[/lastfm] performance was not really representative of what’s on the Recovery album. Guess you’ll have to go to YouTube and pull up “I Love The Way You Lie”, “Not Afraid” and “Airplanes Part II” (with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]B.o.B.[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Hailey Williams[/lastfm]) if you’re interested. I like that he actually gave an acceptance speech without cursing, maybe he read Stoney’s post about how to accept a Grammy award. Yeah, that had to be it. 🙂

If I had ONE slot for Country Music on a general-music awards show…I’d have Miranda Lambert fill it.

I liked Neil Patrick Harris better as Doogie Howser. I really don’t care How You Met Your Mother.

David Letterman’s obligatory “Top Ten” list contained this gem: “Lady Antebellum and Lady GaGa announced they were forming a supergroup called “Lady Antegagum.”

I always appreciated [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bob Dylan[/lastfm] for the passion in his voice. Now that’s gone, replaced by a tone that sounds like he has a really bad cold. I wouldn’t perform on a national stage again if I were him.

Who is Arcade Fire?

Who is Esperanza Spalding?

More Quotes of the Night:

“Right before it went to #1, he asked if he could have it back but it was a little too late” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Miranda Lambert[/lastfm], accepting Best Country Female honors for “The House That Built Me”. Did you know that the song was originally pitched to fiance Blake Shelton?!

“I need to say thank you tonight to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Whitney Houston[/lastfm]. I wanted to thank Whitney because when I wrote ‘Born This Way,’ I imagined she was singing it because I wasn’t secure enough in myself to imagine I was a superstar.” — [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lady GaGa[/lastfm], accepting Best Pop Vocal Album honors for The Fame Monster.

“Oh my gosh, we were so stunned we started walking the wrong direction.” — Hillary Scott of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lady Antebellum[/lastfm] as she accepted the group’s third GRAMMY Sunday.

And that’s where we’ll leave it. If you were a part of our Live Chat, thanks for joining in.
