A new player has entered the chicken sandwich wars.

Buffalo Wild Wings didn't just throw itself into the ring, it declared that it should have found victory amongst the fiercest competitors, Popeyes and Chick-fil-A.

Executive chef of BWW, Jamie Carawan, told Business Insider, "I still think my chicken sandwich is way better."

Carawan is referring to the two mouth-watering additions added to the menu back in August, the Southern Chicken Sandwich and the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich.

They're made with “hand-breaded, Lagunitas IPA beer-battered chicken served on a toasted challah bun," according to Fox News.

The Southern sandwich is topped with Swiss cheese, bacon aioli, Napa slaw, and pickles; the Nashville hot adds more heat with hot sauce, Fresno Chile peppers, and topped with Napa Slaw, pickles, and ranch dressing.

"I think the breading is better and I think our Nashville hot-chicken sandwich is something that is extremely flavorful, high-quality, and I think we're doing some really good things there," Carawan said.

While Carawan believes Popeyes and Chik-fil-A both made "outstanding sandwiches," he wouldn't hesitate to "put them up against any other sports bar or any other chicken sandwich for that matter."

The chicken sandwich wars have forced fast-food giants to step up their game when it comes to fried poultry offerings.

In September 2019, KFC announced their version of the fried chicken sandwich with donuts as buns to their menu.

McDonald’s countered in December 2019 with their Crispy Chicken Sandwich in hopes of taking a bite out of the sales of the two current fried poultry kings.

The chicken sandwich wars officially began after Popeyes released their spicy fried sandwich in August and it completely sold out within two weeks, leaving a lot of customers angry and hungry.

Popeyes re-launched the sandwich in November and made it clear they were coming for Chick-fil-A by sharing a promotional video that featured a man unveiling a Popeyes sign which read “Open Sunday” next to a Chick-fil-A one with “Closed Sunday.”

Since the sandwich’s return, Popeyes locations have been met with long lines across the country and even a few physical altercations.
